‘New Kid on the Block’, Set To Launch On Independence Day

The 1980 Alliance is a network of young Zimbabweans who want to challenge themselves and each other to make a difference. These young people distinguish themselves as ‘self-confessed dreamers, writers, geeks and creatives, adding their voices to the many that are changing the narrative on Zimbabwe on their website and blog, and in partnership with other youth-focused organisations.’ They are driven by a dream and do ethos, which drives them to approach the issues that young people face in Zimbabwe with ‘unrestrained imagination and unlimited enthusiasm and drive.’

Zimbabwean-born Cambridge University graduate Rumbidzai Makanga is the founder of this ground-breaking network. Rumbi received an epiphany when she visited her great-uncle’s grave in Chegutu Heroes’ Acre at the age of 17. She explains, ‘My great-uncle was around the same age (16/17 years old) when he ran off from school to join the liberation war effort. Being struck by how young and determined he was ignited a passion in me for the freedoms and opportunities that those people laid down their lives for. I became restless and I wanted to do something.’

The team comprises of like-minded ambitious young people based in Zimbabwe, the UK and the US. Distance serves as an advantage to channel different perspectives, experiences, narratives and ideas. Zimbabweans who share the same zest are encouraged to join the movement.
