Getting Into Music Was Peer Pressure Says Afrima Winner Cindy

One of the famous faces in the fashion and music industry in Zimbabwe. The award winning star took some time out of her busy schedule to talk to us about the pressures of the industry and her finding her place in it. Check it out below.

How is Cindy doing in 2015?

 

So far so good. The year started on a very high note, just won an Afrima Award, my fashion business is doing well and the single is number one on the charts

Who did you look up to growing up?

Haha eish I listened to a lot of music, I was a very musical child, I liked John Chibadura, Simon Chimbetu, Tuku, Shabba Ranks, Wayne Wonder, I remember a lot of house music, Franky Knuckles lool it was such a fusion, I listened to Bob Marley as well.

Can you tell us how you got into music?

 

Haha its was actually peer pressure, my friend Lorraine Dunduru pushed me, tha’ts peer pressure haha, she always used to hear me sing and since she was a recording artist she persuaded me to get into it.

Where is Lorraine now?

Lorraine is somewhere in South Africa with a very nice job.

What was your dream career as a child?

I wanted to be a model, I stopped growing tall at some point so my modelling dream kind of died haha or a fashion designer! ! That’s why the fashion as back! Tho I am into retail right now, some of the clothes in my store are designed by me and Glam Girl.

What has been the highlight of your career?

Singing at the Big Brother eviction party in front of the 35million African viewers, I really enjoyed that!Singing on stage with Beanie Man at the Castle Larger Beer Fest a couple years ago, opening for Sean Kingstone and winning the Afrima Award in Nigeria.

How long have you been making music for?

Its been 10years since I started.

Whose your producer?

Elton Bryce, he works with other producers from Nigria, South Africa, Malawi etc. He is my manager as well

What challenges are you currently facing?

Music sales are not as good as they should be because of piracy. The finances to do things the way I would like to do them, like the type of video I would like to do, we need to get to a point where we have a 30 thousand dollar budget for our videos and we need to start shooting videos with red cameras if we are to penetrate the continents market.

How does it feel to know that you won an award you were competing with the best artists found on the continent?

It makes me know that I am doing something right you know, I have been at it for 10years now and finally getting acknowledged at continental level makes it all worth it.

How did winning an Afrima change your career?

It totally changes my C.V.

“Ndidzorere Moyo Wangu” is a very nice video and receiving air play on national waves. Have you been able to crack the Channel O & Mtv Base space?

We did send it to channel O, they wrote back to us saying its been approved and was on air a couple of times.

How are you monetizing your music?

Online sales, the shows and endorsements.

Is your business model reflective of the digital landscape in Zim?

The digital landscape in Zim is a behind but we are moving in the right direction ! The music is on over 200 online music stores tho, Amazone,Vevo, Youtube etc

Which are your top 5 favorite local tracks?

I like Pore Pore Ex-Q ft Nesto and Roki, Summertime by me, Aloah- Trey XL, Tasangana Zvidhakwa – Shinso and Maskiri ft Qonfused

What made you decided to open a boutique?

 

My passion for fashion hey, its a childhood dream remember, so it was inevitable.

What do you dislike about fame?

Lack of privacy, people want to know everything about you,I am a creative so sometimes want to go to Mupedza Nhamo and get what I want but people always gather around and want to take pictures.

Are you dating anyone?

haha Everyone wants to know lol but its private.

What do you look for in a life partner?

Someone who is sure of themselves because of my job you have to be sure, a kind heart, he needs to be God fearing, someone who is not quick to judge and takes time to understand me. Broad shoulders, I like men in shorts so nice legs, I like men in sandals

Which Church do you go to?

I am Catholic

Stay focused, believe in your dreams and express yourself, above all just express yourself.
