‘I Started Making Music In 2008’ Says Producer/Rapper Aytee

How Is Aytee Doing In 2015

I am great man, we have been getting up to no good in the studio and I feel like its about time we show Africa what Zimbabwe is capable off.

Who did you look up to growing up?

I always looked up to my Dad growing up. He has always supported my “talent” and anything I was actively engaged in.

Explain the concept of the music? Where do you draw your inspiration from?

I draw my inspiration from anything and everything. I am a huge fan of sampling so my musical ear is pretty good as well. I also analyze a lot as time passes so visuals also invoke creativity for me. As for my lyrical content, I usually base it on life experience and stories that I have heard or read that I feel need to be talked about or highlighted.

Do you write the songs that you perform and record or do you have a designated writer?

I write, produce and perform most of my songs. I only recently started collaborating with other artists and producers which is becoming easier by the day.

Tell us more about your upcoming project?

Aytee
My upcoming E.P, JAW (Just Another Weekend) is basically a small introduction of myself to the public. Its based on the moments that I used to have in my teenage years and a combination of relatable topics involving different emotions and situations. It is basically an, somewhat, emotional journey with an enjoyable touch to it.

When did you start making music and when did you realise you wanted to take it up as a career?

Ayteee
I started making my own music in 2008. Prior to that I had been introduced to music production in the form of Allied Arts and school clubs like marimba club and jazz club which we started at The heritage. I was also Djing at that time.

If you were given the opportunity to collaborate with one of the greatest classically trained artists in the world, who would it be and why?

It would definitely be Ryan Leslie, Simply because he can create new melodies and recreate music on more than 5 instruments. I would also work with him because I feel like he would be the right person to teach me more on various instruments which would be an important skill for my ultimate goal in music which is to create World music.

If money wasn’t an object which car would you be driving and why?

I would definitely drive an Aston martin, No doubt. Aston Martin DBS to be specific. In my Eyes, Aston Martin has the “swagged out” yet classy feel to it that most cars don’t have. The Generic Shape for the Aston Martin is a classic shape as well, Seeing as though Jaguar is now starting to follow the same slick shape.

What should we look forward to the most on your upcoming E.P?

You should Look forward to something different. My e.p is nothing like the current music being put out in Zim. It is not a specific genre, nor is it ‘over-fused’ with a lot of genres. The content is worth listening to as well as it is a little more relatable on an international scale rather than just focusing on Zimbabwean listeners.

Where do you see yourself in 5years?

In 5 years I hopefully will still be in music production but in a larger scale. That means Making Movie scores, corporate tenders, etc and also, I hope to be highly influential in the music industry as an Artist or producer, maybe even both.

Who are your top 5 artists on the continent?

My top 5 artists on the continent right now are:
1. K.O
2. Wizkid
3. Karma
4. Burna Boy
5. Oliver Mtukudzi

What do you dislike about fame ?

I enjoy alone time more than a lot of things so the one major con about fame is lack of privacy. If I was famous, I would still like to have my privacy because forces like the media and the general public will want to “crucify” you for normal human mistakes as though the tabloids are the hub for all things Good and graceful. And in this country, once you become famous and you were never part of the “inner circle”, other socialites and celebraties will put you down in fear of completion. It’s a mess out there.

Any words of wisdom for the youth of Zimbabwe?

All I can say to the youths of Zimbabwe is, Stay true to what you believe. Don’t let the world change you unless its for the better and do what you can do best. Don’t let people mislead you for their own benefit and just stay strong, the country is going to a better place.
