10 Things You Didn’t Know About Winky D

There are many ways you can describe Winky D, starting with talented consistent and also controversial. He’s one of the biggest if not the biggest dance-hall artist in Zimbabwe. But how much do you really know about Winky D? Here are some fun facts you might not know about Winky D.

1. Winky D was born Wallace Chirumiko in Kambuzuma in 1983.

2. He was first known as Wicked Deejay  before he shortened it to Winky D.

3. Winky D doesn’t model anyone, his inspiration comes from the challenges poor people face everyday.

4. He is one of the male circumcision ambassadors in Zimbabwe and collaborated with Oliver Mtukudzi on a song called “if you know you’re a champion get circumcised” aimed at raising awareness to the cause.

5. His first performance outside Zimbabwe was in 2011 in South Africa at the Monash Beer Fest Carnival in Johannesburg.

6. He’s toured UK, South Africa, Australia and North America.

7. He once opened for Sniper Storm and Mavado and denied getting off the stage until Sniper Storm came and grabbed the mic from him.

8. Winky D has over six awards to his name including a NAMA, honorary Dancehall award and many dancehall awards.

9. In 2014 he was featured in the Southern African Music Awards (SAMA).

10. Winky D is said to have many rivals in his genre including Seh Calaz and Jah Prayzah.
