South Africa Suspends Immigrants Deportation For Now

South Africa has temporarily suspended immigrant deportation after human rights activists argued in court that it was insensitive to chase foreigners away soon after the horrific xenophobia attacks that left them homeless.

xenophobia protest

Over the past three weeks more than 800 undocumented migrants have been arrested across South Africa under “operation Fiela-Reclaim” which launched mainly in Gauteng and Kwa-Zulu Natal soon after the xenophobia attacks.

Zimbabwe’s Consul-General Batiraishe Mukonoweshuro yesterday confirmed of deportations through a high court order.

The court order came after migrants including 170 Zimbabweans were raided at the Methodist Central Church in Johannesburg on the 8th of May. Human rights activists stepped in to state that the foreigners were not given enough time to sort out their documentation and some of them had valid asylum documents.

Zimbabwean based human rights lawyer Gabriel Shumba expressed his concern over the South African government decision to deny foreigners legal advice and the delay at the SA home affairs in processing permits when they know foreigners are under attack for not having documents.
