ZIMRA Commissioner-General Gershem Pasi said ZIMRA will start to tax churches and they are already working on a legislation framework that should be ready by November.

“We are focusing on churches and we’ve engaged them, we’re setting parameters”, said Commissioner Pasi. “We don’t care how they make money, come November we will be through with our legislative proposals to the Minister of Finance and Economic Development which will tighten that area because we’ve seen loopholes there.”

Pasi said the churches are not immune to taxation.

ZIMRA is also working on a new electronic system that will be launched on a trial basis to grow the revenue collection and target sectors that are not yet contributing.

“In a few weeks time we will launch our pilot project which will be fool proof and interfaces with our systems.”

Pasi said they are working closely with the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises and Cooperative Development to register SMEs to formalize their operations.
