Top 10 Most Noted Zimbabwean Politicians Of All Time

Zimbabwe has produced some of the strongest and determined politicians who started way before the independence. They are passionate about what they believe in whether you agree with them or not. Some of them have passed on and some are still standing, one thing is for sure these names are mentioned amongst great politicians in Africa.

Here is our top ten most noted Zimbabwean politicians of all time.

1. Robert Mugabe
Robert Mugabe is the current President of Zimbabwe serving since 31 December 1987. He has led the Zimbabwean African National Union-Patriotic Front since 1975.

2. Joshua Knomo
Nkomo was the leader and founder of thr Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU) and a member of the Kalanga tribe. He was a trades union leader, who became President of the banned National Democratic Party and was jailed for 10 years by Rhodesia’s white minority government. After his release ZANU merged with ZAPU to form one party. He died as Vice President of Zimbabwe in 1999.

3. Emmerson Mnangagwa
Mnangagwa is considered one of the powerful figures in the ruling ZANU-PF party. He was appointed Vice President of Zimbabwe on the 10th of December 2014 by President Robert Mugabe and he also continued to serve as Minister of Justice. He had previously served as Minister of Defence from 2009-2013.

4. Morgan Tsvangirai
Tsvangirai is the President of Movement for Democratic Change-Tsvangirai (MDC-T). He became the Prime Minister of Zimbabwe in 2009 until 2013, the position was later abolished.

5. Tendai Biti
He was the secretary-General of the MDC-T political party and Member of Parliament for Harare East. He was the Minister of Finance from 2009-2013.

6. Solomon Mujuru
He was a Zimbabwean Military Officer and politician who led Robert Mugabe guerrilla forces during the Rhodesia Bush War. Post independence Zimbabwe, he went onto become Army Chief and a Member of Parliament. He died on his farm in 2011.

7. Joseph Musika
Musika was a teacher at Usher Institute and went into nationalistic politics. He was elected as National Treasurer of the African National Congress in 1957, when it got banned Musika became Secretary for Youth in ZAPU its successor organization. He was Vice President of ZAPU from 1984-1987. Following Nkomo’s death Musika succeeded him as Vice President of Zimbabwe on 23rd of December 1999 until his death in 2009.

8. Ignatius Chombo
Chombo was nominated as ZANU-PF’s candidate for the House of Assembly. He won the seat in 2008 Parliament elections defeating two candidates of the MDC-T. When the ZANU-PF – MDC National Unity government was sworn in February 2009, Chmbo was retained as Minister of Local Government.

9. Jonathan Moyo
Jonathan Moyo has served in the government of Zimbabwe as Minister of Information samba 2013. He previously served as Minister of Information from 2000- 2008 as an independent candidate in 2005 and 2008.

10. Simon Muzenda
Simon Muzenda served as Deputy Prime Minister from 1980-1987 under Canaan Banana and was re elected Vice President of Zimbabwe from 1997-2003 when he died under President Mugabe.
