The Walking Dead Actress Danai Gurira Defends Zimbabwe Theatre,Says It’s Not Dead

If there’s anyone in better position to understand where Zimbabwean arts industry is, it’s Danai Gurira. Danai is on one of the hottest shows in America right now, The Walking Dead but the actress always finds time to come back home and see first hand where we are behind.

She wasn’t happy when someone mentioned that Zimbabwean Theatre is dead and this what she had to say. “We have a long way to go, revive our creative sector but that road must be traveled. There are stunningly talented Zimbabwean artists on the ground working against all odds to have their craft and commit themselves to a life in the arts”, she said.

Danai says she has witnessed Zimbabweans who are keen and talented transform, saying she’s seen too many extraordinary breakthroughs transformative moments in the workshops, productions and trainings she’s involved in mentioning songstress Kudzai Sevenzo as one of the many multi-talented Zimbabweans.

“It does involve a collective effort. It involves the local and international understanding that this art form, in this place, matters. That empowering the African artist assures us that stories that must be told will be told, that underrepresented and misrepresented voices can finally be subjectively heard”, she says.

Danai says at now they are looking for partners who can help raise the funds for their upcoming inaugural Almasi African Playrights Festival a reality which she describes as a groundbreaking initiative.
