Zimbabwean Scientists Who Have Raised The Flag High

Zimbabwe has produced some intelligent mind who have contributed in making this world a better place to live in and changed people’s lives. Here is a list of some of the noticeable Zimbabwean scientists who have come out on top and raised our flag high to the world.

Gibson Mandishona is a research scientist and mathematician. He built his own prototypes of a biogas plant and a producer gas generator. He formed the center for Renewable Energy and Environment Technology (REET).

Desmond Manatsa

Desmond Manatsa is a climate expert who broke new ground when he discovered that the rise in surface air temperatures in Southern Africa over the past two decades have been due to the loss of upper atmospheric ozone over Antarctica. His work has been published in the journal Nature Geosciences.

Christopher Chetsanga

Professor Christopher Chetsanga is a biochemist who discovered two enzymes involved in the repair of a damaged DNA. His scientific achievements include the discovery of formamido-pyrimidine DNA glycosidase that removes damaged 7-methyl guanine.

Robson Mafoti

Robson Mafoti is an industrial chemist who designed fascia material which was later used successfully by leading American motor companies like GM, Chrysler and Ford. He holds more than thirteen American patents for his inventions in the field of paints, plastics and decorative surfaces.

Solomon Guramatunhu

Solomon Guramatunhu is an eye specialist. He has also an International Ophthalmologist Education Award winner. He is the founder of Ophthalmologist Society of Zimbabwe and the founding chairman of Eyes for Africa, providing eye treatment programs for the poop in countries like Zambia, Angola and Namibia.

Peter Morgan

Peter Morgan invented the Ventilated (Improved) Pit latrine which he calls Blair Latrine. The invention was adopted by the United Nations comes with a ventilation pipe which reduces flies and odor.

Nkulumo Zinyengere recently received an award in Germany for his study focusing on assessing impacts of climate change and adaptation options for dry land farming systems in Southern Africa.

Melisa along with Zinyengere was awarded in Germany for her research which focuses on recovering nutrients and energy from sewage.

Jeremiah Sindire

Jeremiah Sindire invented a hydro engine powered by water which was recognized by the World Intellectual Property Organization and the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization. The water powered engine which was invented in 2009 can generate electricity for domestic use using 40-60 litres of water.
