Tuku To Take His Style To Runway

A man of many talents and an over achiever, some of the ways to describe Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi. The legendary singer is set to showcase a clothing  line for the first time at this year’s Zimbabwe Fashion Week (ZFW).

The clothing range will be a selection of his famous outfits between 1978 until 2014 which will guarantee his fans a trip down the memory lane.

“Zimbabwe Fashion Week is our own, it is a home grown platform at which we should shine and showcase our true creativity with pride. I am taking part in this year’s event to show support and to encourage other Zimbabweans to do the same”, said Tuku.

Mtukudzi said Zimbabweans should use the platform (ZFW) to showcase and promote ourselves and our identity. “We need to something to identify with in terms of fashion and this is a great starting point”, he said.

Speaking about the inspiration behind his stage outfits, Mtukudzi said the outfits have always been inspired by his music throughout the years. ” My stage outfits have been inspired by my music throughout my career, they are in tune with the beat and they differentiate me from other artists. Mtukudzi encouraged Zimbabweans to favor local products to foreign products as it helps in keeping our culture and heritage.

The Zimbabwe Fashion Week executive director, Priscilla Chigariro-Gessen shared her excitement of Tuku showcassing at fashion week. “Oliver Mtukudzi’s decision to participate in ZFW this year is extremely humbling to us as an organization because besides trusting and believing in the platform we created, his participation which is an extremely important thought out process for him, signifies recognition for our work”, she said.

Zimbabwe Fashion Week is ranked third in Africa behind South Africa and Nigeria. Chigariro-Gessen said she was excited to be involved one on one with the production of this year’s event because Oliver Mtukudzi is a legend who has now chosen to show again one of his many talents.
