10 Things You Didn’t Know About Morgan Tsvangirai

Morgan Tsvangirai is the President of the MDC-T, from humble beginnings in his rural home in Buhera to being a Prime Minister. Here’s more of what you might not know about the MDC-T leader.

1. Tsvangirai was born in Buhera to a Kalanga father who worked as a farmer and carpenter. He is the eldest of nine children.

2. He passed his Ordinary level with eight subjects and his first job was as a trainee weaver for elastic and tapes textile factory in Mutare.

3. He later moved to Bindura where he worked as an apprentice for the Anglo American’s Nickel Mine, he worked at the company for ten years.

4. He got married to his first wife Susan, when he was twenty-six, they had six children. Susan died in a car accident in 2009 in which Tsvangirai survived.

5. When Morgan was 28 Zimbabwe gained its Independence and he joined the ZANU PF party to a point where he became a senior official for the party.

6. Tsvangirai is also known for his role in the Zimbabwe Trade Union movement, in 1989 he became the Secretary General of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions.

7. In 1999 he founded the Movement Democratic Change party which is the main opposition party to ZANU PF.

8. During a visit to South Korea in 2010, Tsvangirai was honored with an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws by Pai Chai University becoming the 13th recipient of the honorary degree in history.

9. In February 2009 Morgan Tsvangirai was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Zimbabwe under the united government.

10. Tsvangirai has been married three times.
