The second runner up for the Black Opal Face of Zimbabwe Mercy Kamakura has been dragged to court for allegedly stealing a $40 jumpsuit from Edgars in Harare and removing the price-tag.

Black Opal Spokesperson Tanaka Ngorora said they will only take action after the trial and court judgement. Ngorora said the incident will not affect the Black Opal brand because it is bigger than the accused.

“Our brand will definitely not be affected, it is bigger than her. I don’t think this will affect the users; people will not stop buying our products as the brand goes beyond her. This year’s theme is Step Into the Spotlight, it is unfortunate that she has stepped into the spotlight in this way”, he said.

The spokesperson also revealed that the winners had not received their prizes yet despite being crowned over a month ago. “We had not entered into any contracts yet, as you know the prize-giving ceremony has not yet been conducted. We give it time, especially for incidents like these”, said Ngorora.

He also made it known that the case against Mercy will not take away the fact that she came third in the competition.

On Edgars being one of Black Opal’s biggest customers, Ngorora said the relationship was not affected by the incident. “We have a strong relationship that is bigger than what has happened, after the court case has been settled, I will write a letter of apology”, he said.
