In a video posted on One Young World’s YouTube channel, Chakwana sites how Zimbabwe’s agricultural production, power generation and economic development have all suffered from changing climate.

“The effects of climate change upon us as a country according to the metallurgical services of Zimbabwe,  since 1987 the country has experienced its six warmest years and in the last two decades the country has experienced the ten most severe droughts, a decrease in fresh water and also a reduction in biodiversity as we speak”, said Chakwana in front of One Young World Councillors who included former UN Secretary-general Kofi Annan.

“The water levels at Kariba  have dropped to below 30% and the United Nations Development Programme predicts that agricultural production in our country is going to decrease by at least 30% which is going to affect about three quarters of Zimbabwe’s population that depend on agriculture as their source of livelihood.”

Chakwana said the country needs to enact laws that lead to harnessing of cleaner sources of energy and laws that can help ordinary Zimbabweans to acclimatize to change in the weather patterns.
