NewsDay Workers Receiving Food Vouchers As Salaries

Media mogul Trevor Ncube has come under scrutiny after he failed to pay his Zimbabwean employees for the months of October, November and December only to compensate the salaries with OK grocery vouchers worth R1500.

Ncube reportedly gave his Newsday, The Zimbabwe Independent and The Standard workers R770 cash and the OK food vouchers towards Christmas holidays to cover up for the three month they had not been paid.

The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists has come to the workers’ defense urging Ncube and his management to respect the workers and pay them their salaries. “It is unacceptable to pay them in grocery vouchers and a miserable $50 (R770)”, said Zimbabwe Union of Journalists Secretary General, Foster Dongozi.

“We operate in a messed up economic environment, they therefore need to explain  the  situation  to  workers  as  a group and not individually”.

As expected his employees are not happy with the treatment saying vouchers don’t pay rent, taxi fares or fees.
