Top 10 Zimbabweans Making Waves Across The World

Making it onto the big screen is not an easy task anywhere in the world, in Zimbabwe we have so many actors and actresses as well as artists who are making waves across the world, these people have managed to make it in the US and some in the S.A entertainment industry in turn of raising the Zimbabwean flag high. We bet you don’t know half the names on this list. Find out the names below!

1. Danai Gurira

Walking Dead star, Michonne as she is known, has been active on the film screens from as far back as 2004, starring in Law and Order. Recently appointed to star as late great hip hop singer Tupac Shakur’s mother, Gurira has made a number of trips back home to encourage the Zimbabwean arts scene.

2. Jackie Muchanyuka-Mgido

Jackie Muchanyuka-Mgido is the founder of Vault Cosmetics , a local manufacturer and distributor of make-up and women facial products and Vault Academy Make-up School. But her flirtation with Hollywood come with having worked with world class actors and singers like Denzel Washington and rapper-cum-actor-James Todd ”LL Cool J” Smith, john Legend and many more.

3. Sibongile Mlambo.

Mlambo, as she is affectionately known, is an actress, dancer and model, who has been picked to be the lead actress in Universal Pictures third sequel of ”Honey”. Honey is a dance film that initially starred Jessica Alba as the lead actress. The plot of Honey is generally the same old dance story: a choreographer who desperately wants to make it, and goes through thick and thin to dance.

 4. Farai Simoyi

Not appearing on the screen though she has one movie to her credit,  Farai has been move visible behind the screen dressing the likes of Beyonce, Anne Klein, Rachel Roy, Robert Rodriguez, and Nicki Minaj.

5. Tongayi Chirisa

Tongayi, who started his career as a Detective in Zimbabwean soap called Studio 263. Later he landed a role in the South African top movie, Mr. Bones 2. His great talent saw him land roles in Hollywood where he has starred in NCIS  Los Angeles, Robinson Crusoe, and others films.

6. Jane Benney

Best known for starring in Mr. Bones, Jane Benney, was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Apart from Mr. Bones, Benney had a role in the Hollywood movie All for Melissa.

7. Chipo Chung

Little know at home in Zimbabwe, Chipo Chung, is a prominent actor globally having featured in such productions as Fortitude, Sherlock, The Politician’s Husband, Camelot, In The Loop, Doctor Who and others. What she may be known for at home however is that she is the daughter of former Zanu-PF politician, Fay Chung.

8. Leroy Gopal.

Leroy Gopal, who landed his first role at age 7, in the TV Drama Series Paraffin, had his first big local appearance in the movie ‘Yellow Card’, for which he’s best known in Zimbabwe. He has however become a much sought after actor in neighboring South Africa where he’s starred in soaps such as Backstage, Home Affairs, One Way, Jozi H and Jacob’s Cross. In the US, he starred in the 2014 movie Seal Team Eight: Behind Enemy Lines and a minor role in 2013 TV Series Strike Back among others.

9. Prudence Mabhena

Songbird, Prudence Mabhena, is best known for being the subject of an Oscar award-winning documentary called ”Music by Prudence” based on her life story. The film, which chronicles the vicissitudes of her life as a physically challenged and yet gifted child to adulthood, won in the Best Short Documentary Film for US film director, Roger Ross Williams and this took Mabhena to the Oscar Awards in Los Angeles, USA in March 2010.

10. Lucian Msamati.

Hello , you’ll love this one! Though not strictly Zimbabwean as he was not born here, Lucian Msamati, who has acted as ‘Salladhor Saan’ in Game of Thrones, was brought up in Zimbabwe by his Tanzanian parents, a doctor and a nurse. Apart from his role in Game of Thrones, Msamati has also starred in ‘The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency andThe Legend of the Sky Kingdom
