Students Admitted After Suspected Typhoid Breakout In Masvingo

At least fifteen students and two cooks from Silveira High School in Bikita have been admitted at the Mission’s hospital after a suspected typhoid outbreak on Monday.

The breakout was detected after one of the first pupils to be infected tested positive at Morgenster Mission Hospital. The outbreak has disrupted lessons at the school as they fear more students might get infected.

“We have heard such reports, but as far as we are concerned, we do not have any suspected outbreak of the disease. What happened is there was a case that went to Morgenster Mission Hospital which was treated as case of typhoid but was not confirmed”, said the Masvingo acting Provincial Medical Director, Amadeus Shamhu.

Shamhu said students can be tested and come out positive of the infection but that does not mean they have it. He said it is not specific and tests can only be confirmed in Harare.

The ministry of health and child is also said to be monitoring the situation closely to prevent more people getting infected.
