Zimbabwean Tendekayi Katsiga Gets The Millionth Vote In A Tech-I Competition

Tendekayi Katsinga is a young entrepreneur who has a start-up company, Deaftronics (Pty) Ltd, manufacture high quality affordable solar powered hearing aids, made by deaf people for people with a hearing loss.

The Zimbabwean born who lives in Botswana established Deaftronics , a biotechnology company in 2009 as a subsidiary of Solar Ear International which focuses on medical devices.

Katsiga’s company manufactured the first solar powered hearing aid unit called Solar Ear which includes a digital rechargeable hearing aid, a solar battery charger and four rechargeable batteries that can charge in two to three hours in direct sun. The batteries are versatile, they can be charged with a cell phone charger or via household light. They can last up to a week and have a lifespan of two to three years.

Deaftronics aims to empower the hearing impaired by creating employment opportunities and helping them to better integrate themselves into the deaf community. The company also provides training and also employs young hearing impaired individuals to design its products.
