Tuku music lives on

The month of February was a very difficult one following the sudden passing on of Zimbabwean music legend Oliver Mutukudzi. Tuku’s death did not only rattle the local music landscape as fans from all over the world mourned the death of a true legend that was bestowed with heroes status for immense work he had done in uplifting Zimbabwe internationally courtesy of his refined Afro-jazz music.

With Mutukudzi’s son Sam having passed away before his father, Selmor Mutukudzi now bears the burden of seeking to ensure that her fathers legacy lives on. In a recent post on instagram Selmor Mutukudzi places a post in which she advertises a show which is set for the Andy Miller hall on 29 March. Particularly striking is the caption which reads Tuku music lives on which insinuates that despite the death of Zimbabwe’s icon fans will continue to enjoy the Mutukudzi fine vibe courtesy of Selmor Mutukudzi.

Though having largely lived in the shadow of her father Selmor has always exhibited great musical talent. The question of who should carry on with Oliver Mutukudzi’s musical legacy has occupied public discourse since his death, with Selmor tipped as a possible successor. There has been a lot of disharmony in the Mutukudzi family with the late musicians widow Daisy distancing herself from any events being lined up by Selmor in the name of the legendary music icon.

While family squabbles are expected to persist in the coming weeks judging from the sheer talent exhibited Selmor Mutukudzi is expected to be the one that ensures Tuku’s music lives on. Selmor rose to national stardom in 2013 after releasing her album ‘Expressions’ which carried the hit ‘Nguva Yangu’. The latter topped the charts and was nominated for a National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA). Ever since Selmor has been heavily involved in the music industry will be hoping to continue with her father’s legacy.
