3 Toxic Effects of Green Tea

Green tea offers many healthful benefits but should be drunk in moderation. Going is green is the way to go but too much of everything is not good. While green tea is rich in antioxidants and nutrients it can have negative health effects. There are chemicals in green tea if consumed in large quantities. The compounds in green tea responsible for most negative health effects are caffeine, the element fluorine, and flavonoids. The combination of these and other chemicals may cause liver damage. It also interacts with several medications, so it’s important to take caution when drinking green tea. So how much is too much when it comes to the earthy, green coloured beverage. Below are three toxic effects of green tea.

1.Caffeine

Caffeine in any beverage can spell trouble worse still in large amounts. Caffeine is a stimulant, so it increases heart rate and blood pressure. Too much caffeine can lead to rapid heartbeat, insomnia, and tremors to stimulant psychosis or even death. Each cup of green tea often contains about 35 mg per cup and the average person can only tolerate 200-300 mg of caffeine.

2. Flourine

Drinking too much green tea can contribute unhealthy levels of fluorine to the diet. Too much fluorine can lead to developmental delays, bone disease, dental fluorosis, and other negative effects.

3. Flavonoids

Flavonoids are potent antioxidants that help protect cells from free radical damage. However, flavonoids also bind nonheme iron. Drinking too much green tea can lead to anemia or a bleeding disorder.
