Sulu Convicted for Failure to Pay Maintenance

Dendera musician Sulumani Chimbetu was sentenced to five months in prison for failure to pay child maintenance.He was convicted when he appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Amanda Muridzo on Wednesday. Sulu  pleaded guilty to failing to pay maintenance for the two children with his ex-wife Marygold Mutemasango.

Chimbetu maintenance backlog amounts up to $4 400. His sentence then paid $300 which saw his sentence being suspended. The remaining debt is yet to be settled on or before February 15.

It is the State’s case that on December 19, 2016, the Harare Civil Court ordered Sulu to pay $800 maintenance for his two children, but he defaulted for the period between May and October last year. He only paid $400 in two installments on August 2 and September last year which resulted in his arrears rising to $4 400.
