The UZ (University of Zimbabwe) Faculty of Arts has launched a strategic business unit, which offers training and translation services to various institutions for a fee.

UZ lecturer Eventhough Ndlovu, speaking at the launch of the Faculty of Arts Language Consultancy Unit (FALCONS) in Harare last Friday reportedly said  that the shortage of translators had inspired them to introduce the programme.

”The shortage of interpreters and translators in Zimbabwe has become an impediment for citizens who seek services from public service providers like hospitals and the police because of language barriers, we have heard some cases of people who are instructed to provide their own interpreters or translators when going to the hospital, while, in actual fact, the hospital should have employed interpreters or translators to assist the public,” he added.

Chairperson of FALCONS, Patricia Mabugu allegedly said interpretation was barely recognised as a profession in Zimbabwe as a faculty, they have taken it upon themselves to raise awareness on the importance of translators and interpreters in the Zimbabwean community.
