10 Things You Didn’t Know About Matthew Rusike

Matthew Rusike is one of the most exciting young Zimbabwean players to watch right now. Now based in Portugal where he plays for CD Nacional Madeira Football Club, we take a look at some of the events which helped shaped his football career.

1. Matthew Rusike was born on the 28th of June 1990 in Harare, Zimbabwe.

2. He attended St Georges College where he played rugby.

3. His love for soccer started at an early age when he was enrolled at  BN Academy.

4. When Matthew was 16, he tried his luck in England with Charlton Athletic but could not stay for long because of work permit.

5. Upon his return to Zimbabwe he joined PSL club Monomotapa and won the league in his first year there at the club.

6. Rusike thought of quitting football after being released from his contract with Pretoria University but got a call to play for Jomo Cosmos.

7. Born to a black Zimbabwean father and white South African mother, Rusike has citizenship of both countries but opted to play for the Warriors.

8. Before signing to Kaizer Chiefs, the then English Premiership club Bolton had interests in signing the young striker along with French and Belgian clubs which also expressed interest.

9. Rusike has won two awards so far in his career, first the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League Winners Medal and 2011-2012 Jomo Cosmos Football Club Player of the Year award.

10. Rusike is the first Zimbabwean to play in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.
