Maswanhise impresses on Leicester debut

Prospective Warriors forward Tawanda Maswanhise has made headlines in England after an impressive debut for English premier League side Leicester City in a pre-season friendly against Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday.

Maswanhise who is one of the four players from the Foxes development side was thrown into the fray by manager Brendan Rodgers for city pre-season preparations.

According to reports from England, the 18-year-old was on top of his game and outshone his peers as the Zimbabwean eyes to assert himself in the team and command a first-team jersey ahead of the August season.

“Tawanda Maswanhise is very impressive.  He may be slight but was keen and his bursts of acceleration allowed him to win plenty of free-kicks. He showed some nice interplay with Maddison and nearly scored a cracking goal as he chipped the ball up and volleyed just over 30 yards,” Leicester columnist Jordan Blackwell said in his player ratings after the match.

Maswanhise broke into the Foxes first team squad when he was named in the match day squad against Manchester United at Old Trafford towards the end of the 2019/20 season after impressing at Leicester’s under-18 side.

The Zimbabwean played alongside highly-rated forward Patson Daka of Zambia in the first 45-minutes of the game as well club greats like Jammie Vardy, James Maddison and Kelechi Iheanacho to mention a few.

With Zimbabwe’s World Cup qualifiers coming in September, the performance of Maswanhise come as sweet music to Warriors coach Zdravko Logarusic who will have many options.
