Danai Gurira’s Black Panther Co-Star Joins Play

It’s public knowledge that Danai Gurira is an excellent playwright. What’s more obvious is her friendship with Black Panther costar Lupita N’yongo. Apart from being costars and friends, N’yongo was cast in Gurira’s broadway play ‘Eclipse’. Now another female costar joins the cast of her play The Covert.

British actress Letitia Wright, who starred as princess Sheri, will play Jekesai/Ester, in The Covert.

Wright is cast alongside Paapa Essiedu, Ivanno Jeremiah, Jude Akuwudike, Rudolphe Mdlongwa, and Pam Nomvete.

The Covert is about a Shona-speaking girl rescued from a forced marriage by a black Catholic teacher who biblically rechristens her Ester. Under his tutelage, Ester forsakes her family and becomes the teacher’s devout protégé, and must decide where her loyalties ultimately lie when advancing anti-colonial riots threaten the mission.

Ola Ince directs the new iteration of the play, which had its world premiere in 2012. The Convert will preview on December 7 at London’s Young Vic theatre.
