Five Years Unplugged With DJ Cleo

Unplugged has withered the storms of the year. Despite economic challenges, the monthly event has managed to host events all year round. Five years ago, on December 15, two young women started an event that has become the core of Zimbabwean events.

Unplugged turned 5 on Saturday 15 December. The event was held at what has become the home venue, Wingate. Running under an old school theme, attendees dressed up in the best of their throwback outfits.

MCs, radio personalities Butterphly and Amard were dressed for the occasion. Butterphly took on colour from the 90s, while Amard walked out of a Madonna 80s music video.

Unplugged ensured a perfect blend of the old and new. Nyasha David, Leonard Mapfumo, Prayersoul and Sanii Makhalima took fans back to the R&B classics of the 90s. Bryan K performed some of his hits including Heavy Machine.

The crowds went wild over Ex Q a.k.a Mr Putiti’s performance. Ex Q had the longest set of the local line up. With his growing discography, Ex Q performed his classics, hit collaborations and of course the current chart favourites.

Amard and Butterphly brought on Ex Q, Nyasha David and Vimbai Zimuto to sing the birthday chorus. It didn’t take time after sunset when the headline act came onto the stage.

Renowned, award winning South African producer and DJ, DJ Cleo showed Zimbabwe a lot of love. His introduction was the Zimbabwean national anthem before hitting his set.

DJ Cleo played a mixed bag of music including some of his own music. The crowd was charged up, full of life and very festive. Anybody who didn’t leave with red dust on their shoes, might have played too ‘cool for the old school.’

Unplugged at 5 wrapped up yet another year in social events.
