Sani Makhalima appeals to fans

Musician Sani Makhalima made a heartfelt appeal to his fans to highlight their concerns with regards to the music industry.

The plea was made in an endevour to include the wishes of his listeners in upcoming projects. Sani Makhalima encouraged his fans to air their grievances and highlight what the local artists are doing wrong or getting right in the composition and production of their music.

A lot of comments were made with the most criticism being that local musicians were failing the local people by trying to adopt Western beats and music. One fan encouraged local musicians to start using traditional local instruments such as mbira and marimba instead of Western instruments as this would bring the artists closer to their audience.

Another fan bemoaned lack of creativity and originality in music. He said artists should strive to come up with their own ideas and embrace their unique abilities rather than imitate international artists. Sani Makhalima’s engagement with his audience comes in the midst of debates with most people arguing that local urban grooves and zimdancehall artists are producing bubblegum music which has no depth but merely loses relevance with time.

These issues are indeed pertinent and with the demise of great musicians such as Oliver Mutukudzi, Dorothy Masuka and Simon Chimbetu, young artists ought to be groomed on issues relating to production of sound and meaningful masterpieces that can endure for generations
