Ever woken up in the morning from what should have been a night’s rest, only to feel so drained. Some days you have no energy to do what you normally feel enthusiastic about? Often long working days and active social lives take much of the energy and that is normal. Is there however something like being too tired that not even a nap, food or even a cup of coffee wont fix? Medical experts have shared that at times fatigue is a result of underlying health issues.

1. Under active thyroid

When one thinks of the word thyroid they quickly associate it with goitre. Growing up most have been told to have a certain amount of salt so that their necks wont swell. The thyroid gland produces the hormone thyroxine, which controls how much energy the body uses. When it is under active, an individual will often feel tired and pain. This is because the body’s functions are slowing down which results in inactivity. In women it is more prevalent and worsens with age. An under active thyroid can be boosted through exercise or alternatively hormone replacement.

2. Diabetes

We live in a day and age where there is a lot of emphasis about diabetes awareness. From preventive measures in diet and check ups, diabetes is one of the world’s most threatening health issues. Exhaustion or fatigue is one of the main symptoms of diabetes. Diabetes is due to body is unable to control blood sugar levels so controlling sugar levels will help relieve tiredness. This is done with insulin injections, a healthy diet, exercise and regular monitoring of your blood glucose level.

3. Anaemia

Anaemia is a condition where a lack of iron in the body leads to a reduction in the number of red blood cells. If you recall biology class, red blood cells carry oxygen to the rest of the body. This lack of oxygen is what leads to feeling tired. Aneamia affects one in 20 men whilst women who still have periods or are pregnant are affected more. Iron supplements and having food rich in iron can help solve the problem.

4. Sleep apnoea

Sleep apnoea is a condition that interrupts your breathing when you are asleep. This causes the sufferer to wake up frequently during the night or sleep lightly. Ever been told that you snore a lot when you sleep? That could be a symptom of sleep apnoea which is most common in overweight, middle aged men. If you feel tired in the morning and restless at night you could be suffering from sleep apnoea. Changing sleeping positions and health lifestyles can help get rid of sleep apnoea and fatigue.

5. Depression

Ever felt so sad for a very long time, that could be depression. Depression is one of the most common mental disorders worldwide. It is common that many teenagers and adults will suffer from depression at one point in time or another. The causes vary from stress to hormonal imbalances and even lack of sunlight. If not attended to depression can stop you falling asleep hence draining your energy. Depression can be dealt with through activity, talking to someone and even changing your diet.
