Eleven bodies of Zimbabwean mine workers were retrieved from a disused mine after a generator they were using exploded. They were fifteen altogether three of them were Mozambican.
The group of illegal miners had been underground since the 27th of August and were using the generator for drilling and lighting. They died of oxygen deprivation.
The South African police advised people to stop illegal mining saying, “As police we are appealing to the members of the community to stop illegal mining activities as they risk their lives and prosecution.” The police were still investigating if there were more bodies in the mine.
Last year twenty-two Zimbabwean lost their lives in another disused mine in Rooderport.
