Opportunity For Zimbabwean Youth:Zim Vet Course 2016

The Zim Vet Course runs from August 1st to 14th, 2016 and allows volunteers the opportunity to work alongside qualified wildlife vets for hands-on experience of veterinary medicine.  No formal training or qualifications are required; just a passion for conservation and a willingness to embrace new experiences and acquire new skills.

The course will take place at Antelope Park in Gweru, Zimbabwe, home to the African Lion Rehabilitation & Release into the Wild Programme.  In your free time, you can enjoy everything the Park has to offer, including meeting the resident lions and elephants, and horseback game rides and game drives.

What will I be doing?

During your placement, you will learn how to track and locate wildlife, form capture plans, treatment plans and recovery plans.

Hands-on training will include:

  • The theory behind animal immobilisation, treatment and conservation
  • Assisting with lion immobilisation and contraceptive implanting
  • Deworming elephants
  • Carrying out tick treatments for giraffes
  • Working with a game capture team during game translocation and rabies vaccinations

This course requires a moderate level of fitness, due to the physical nature of wildlife work.  Places are strictly limited to 12 participants
