Blaqs Addresses Snubbed NAMA Nominees

Every year the NAMAs are not without controversy. This year’s biggest controversy is the issue of the three categories that had no winners. According to the adjudicators, none of the nominees worthy of a gong.

There were some people who felt that Jah Prayzah wasn’t worthy of three awards. Songstress Ammara Brown felt robbed of the Best Female category. The award went to gospel singer Janet Manyowa.

Ammara addressed the snub on her instagram where she shared:

“Many of you feel I was ‘robbed’ of awards, but let’s take a moment. The NAMAs are not based on facts, they are based on opinions. A panel of anonymous judges, observe your work and battle it out among themselves. My numbers don’t lie. Ammartia you are the biggest Zimbabwean fan base under any female by faaaarrr. My debut album reached Number 2 on iTunes Charts in its first week. While Akiliz has climbed Trace Africa Charts, it hit half a million views in 6 weeks. Don’t get me started on all the tours I did and to top it off YOUR VOTES made it Song of The Year for 2017 on the Star fm Charts .. But! These are facts. The NAMAs aren’t based on facts, they’re based on opinions. I understand your frustrations but, they’ve reiterated continuously that it is not a popularity contest.”

Many of the Afro pop singers fans sympathised with her. Director Blaqs took the awards differently. While in South Africa, the director shared his thought about the awards. He empathised with those who were snubbed of the NAMAs.

He wrote:

“Just a few words for those complaining about awards. The need for acceptance will derail you. The more you look for validation the more the world will ignore you. So what a few people didn’t recognize your hard work. Big deal. The truth is it’s your audience that pays you.

Maybe This industry is not about MERIT or TALENT. Maybe it’s about loyalty and affiliation. Maybe It’s not for the underdogs of eccentric innovators. Maybe It’s for Compliers and the ‘good’ guys.”

Blaqs added that these artists should focus on being better. The road isn’t easy but it’s part of the growth process. He encouraged that there is no need for jealousy. He’s ended his message by dismissing social media trolls.
