Top 6 things to do before hiring a maid.

Hiring a maid can be one of the best decisions for you. Not only will you have someone to do your cleaning and take care of your home but you will also have someone to look over your kids in your absence. That might not always be the case as some maids can turn out to have sinister motives. We have compiled a list of things to look into before you hire a maid.

1 Find a refferal.

Employ someone with a good recommendation. Ask your friends and relatives if they have good people they can connect you to. You can also try out reputable agencies and you can revert back to them when you encounter problems with the maid.

2 Set up an interview first.

Always interview your potential maid first. This is a great opportunity for you to learn their strengths and weaknesses. You can also get additional information about the maid which I’d not on their c.v.

3 Agree on the salary.

Agree on how you are going to be paying your maid and how much. Make it clear if you will be paying weekly or monthly. Give a clear amount and any other benefits such as bonus or health insurance. Also agree in the payment mode. The issue of cash shortages in Zimbabwe has led to some people paying their maids using ecocash or Bank transfers unlikin that past where cash was not scarce.

4 Decide on tasks.

Reflect in which tasks the maid will be doing. Some women in Zimbabwe do not like maids to wash their husband’s clothes, others prefer to do their own cooking. Clearly decide on what the maid will be doing and the limitations.

5 Set a trial period.

Like any other job, set up a trial period. This is the time to test whether your maid is well acquainted for the job or not. This is alos a great time to teach them how you want your chores done and highlight your concerns.

6 Set boundaries.

Make it clear to your maid what you can tolerate and those things that you will not tolerate. Set your boundaries and expectations. Do not shy away from setting out your desires as the owner of the house.
