1. Invented by pharmacist John Pemberton in 1886.

2. Coca-Cola was originally intended as a medicinal ‘brain tonic’. Taking ingredients from the kola nut, a source of caffeine, it also controversially contained cocaine up until 1903.

3. The modern recipe is a closely-guarded secret, with reportedly only a handful of people knowing it and the written copy kept safe in a highly-secure vault in Atlanta.

 4. Having decided on the name Coca-Cola as it was believed the two Cs would look good in advertising, the logo hasn’t changed much since 1886 (aside from a swirly makeover in 1890).
5. The Spencerian font first used is still evident in today’s design, with only simple tweaks developing the brand over 125 years. The most noticeable addition is the ‘white wave’ that was included from 1969 and is still used today.
6. Despite being invented by John Pemberton, it was actually a businessman called Asa Griggs Candler who brought Coke to the masses. Having bought Coca-Cola from Pemberton in 1888 for $550, he marketed it aggressively, making millions in return.
7. The 1980s was a particularly exciting time for the brand, with Coca-Cola becoming the first soft drink to ever be consumed in space.
8. Coca-Cola says that its name is the second most understood term in the world, with over 94% of people recognizing it. The top term is ‘okay’.
10. In fact, if you bottled every drop of Coke ever produced in 8-ounce bottles and laid them end-to-end, they would reach to the moon and back over 2,000 times!
