Harare man commits suicide by jumping from tenth floor

A 29 year old man from Harare jumped from a tenth floor window to his death on the Harare central business district area. The young man plunges to his death in a suspected case of suicide. Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident and stated,”Police in Harare are investigating a suspected suicide case involving a 29 year old man who is believed to have jumped from the 10th floor of a building in the CBD. He suffered head injuries and died on the spot. We urge the public to seek counselling instead of taking their lives”.

Most men have been reportedly taking their own lives and experts have said the current economic meltdown has left men struggling to take care of their families. This has led to increased cases of depression and eventually suicide. The other aggravating factor is that people are bound by cultural norma and do not seek professional counselling.

Last year there was a surge in the number of suicide cases. Otherwise reasons for committing suicide include traumatic experiences, some find it difficult to accept their HIV positive status while for young people it is usually social media related or revenge for being reprimanded.

The country is currently battling a shortage of psychiatrists and mental health institutions. Suffice to say the African society does not take mental health issues seriously.
