Alick Macheso popularly known as “Cheso Power” is one of the best selling artists in Zimbabwe. Amongst his peers of the same generation of music,  he is the one who started later but has succeeded more than most of them. It seems his different and original sound has helped him sustain his career.

1. Alick Macheso was born in 1969 in Shamva where he also grew up. His father was of Malawian descent and his mother a Mozambican.

2. He came onto the music scene in 1998, with his debut album Mugariro.

3. Macheso is a polyglot being fluent in Shona, Chichewa, Sena, Venda and Lingala.

4. Started out playing in different bands he branched out in 1997 from Nicholas Zacharia’s band to form his own band, Orchestra Mberikwazvo.

5. The Sungura pioneer is Zimbabwe’s best-ever selling artists.  His album Simbaradzo is the highest ever sold album in Zimbabwe.

6. The “borrowdale” and “zora bata” dance creator has over six albums to his name.

7. He is one of the best bass guitarist on the continent, he is well known mostly in Southern parts of Africa.

8. Macheso has used his popularity to represent organizations, more recently being chosen to be the Red Cross ambassador.

9. He is also an award inning artist claiming Best song of the year in 2003 for “Madhuve”, Best Live performer at ZIMA for 2004-05, ZIMA best sungura artist and Best selling album for “Zvakanaka Zvakadaro.”

10. Macheso has had his share of industry rivals first with Nicholas Zakaria which rumors say the song “kutema munda” was dedicated to and later in his career with the late Tongai Moyo who he claims was a copycat.
