Female activist Joanna Mamombe had cause for celebration after bagging an award recently. The MDC activist was One Young World Politician of the year 2020 award. This was in recognition of her efforts as a human rights activist.
Mamombe was recently in prison for allegedly supplying false information to the police with two other female activists. She had been reported to be missing and was said to have been abducted by state agents after staging a demonstration to protest against hunger. She and the two other activists were later found dumped with bruises and signs of torture. After making a police report about the abduction, tables turned and the trio was arrested for making a false report. They have since been granted bail pending the hearing of their mattter.
Mamombe is the youngest female member of parliament in the country. She is outspoken and is not afraid to speak her mind. She was labelled as “a champion of human rights and gender activism” as a recipient of the award.
Joana has been seen as a medium through which young people highlight their concerns. Her role in politics has been commended by her followers. Joanna follows in the footsteps of females like Beatrice Mtetwa, who was also given an award for her human rights work last year.
Joanna might have faced some struggles in the political field due to its male dominance but she has proven to be strong willed
