Berita Returns to the Stage for Divas of Soul Celebration

Soulful singer Gugulethu Khumalo, known to fans as Berita, is set to make a powerful return to the stage as part of the Divas of Soul concert lineup. The event marks its first edition since 2019 and will bring together some of South Africa’s most celebrated female artists for a night dedicated to authentic soul music. For Berita, this performance represents more than a return to live shows; it is a homecoming and a tribute to the women who have shaped and sustained the soul genre.

Speaking to Sunday World, Berita expressed her gratitude for being included in this year’s lineup. “This event celebrates authentic home-grown soul music. To have the opportunity to be back on this stage is truly special. And I’m grateful to be part of it,” she said. The Ndicel’ikiss hitmaker sees the concert as a platform that not only highlights artistry but also honors the power and resilience of women in music. For her, it’s an evening about recognition, celebration, and shared stories that connect female artists and their audiences.

Berita’s career has long been anchored in collaboration and sisterhood. She shared that she often leans on her peers for support and perspective, especially fellow musician Amanda Black, whom she described as “a true sister.” “Whenever I face a challenge, whether it’s about music, life, or the business side of it, I turn to other women. Amanda and I have collaborated on each other’s albums. She’s someone I know I can call when I need guidance,” she said. For Berita, the unity among women in the industry is a source of strength that continues to inspire her. “We share so many lived experiences and stories that connect us. Our sisterhood can inspire other women who are watching us, showing what’s possible when we uplift one another.”

With over a decade in the music industry, Berita’s artistry continues to evolve. She reflects on her growth both as a musician and as a woman, noting that her approach to songwriting and performance has deepened over time. “Soul music only gets better with time,” she said. “I’ve been singing, writing, playing guitar, and performing for the past 11 years. And my music keeps evolving. It feels richer and more honest with each season of my life.” She adds that songs she wrote when she was younger now hold new meaning. “When I first wrote some of my songs, I was still a young girl finding my voice. Now, as a grown woman, I can sing them with a new kind of depth. From a place of lived experience and reflection.”

Beyond her music, Berita remains passionate about empowerment and representation. She believes in the importance of women taking up space in all creative and professional fields, including those traditionally dominated by men. “There’s something powerful about a woman holding a guitar and expressing herself through her art,” she said. “I want women to see that it’s possible to do things that aren’t always expected of us.” Her message is clear: empowerment begins with authenticity and courage.

Before any major performance, Berita follows a self-care routine that helps her prepare mentally and physically. “The day before a show, I give myself a home facial,” she shared with a laugh. “On the day, I steam to prepare my voice and take some quiet time to breathe, stretch, pray, and centre myself before stepping on stage.” For her upcoming Divas of Soul appearance at Emperors Palace on December 6, Berita promises fans a surprise. “Join us and you’ll see for yourself. I’m collaborating with a local designer for a statement outfit. I’m going all out.”

Berita recently released her single Gugulethu and hinted that she will debut a new track during the concert. “I’m definitely due for a follow-up single. The audience will get an exclusive taste of it at the concert,” she confirmed. As she steps back into the spotlight, Berita continues to embody authenticity, grace, and soulful storytelling. “I want to encourage women to come out and celebrate with each other. Bring your sisters, your mothers, your friends, and let’s make it a night to remember.”
