10 Things You Didn’t Know About Maskiri

Maskiri is one of the most if not the most controversial rapper in Zimbabwe. With his provocative lyrics and unique style of rapping, he has managed to stay relevant in the Zimbabwean hip hop industry for over a decade. Get to know the man behind all the headlines and the name “Maskiri”.

1. Maskiri was born Alishias Musimbe in 1980 in Chitungwiza where he also grew up.

2. Maskiri attended Chemhanza High School before getting expelled for bad behavior, he was then enrolled at St Aidens High School in Chitungwiza but left before completing high school.

3. He started making music back in 2003 in his hometown Chitungwiza at Phathood Studios.

4. Maskiri has six albums to his name with another one currently in the works.

5. His song “dhara rangu” was banned from getting airplay on local radio stations because of its message.

6. In 2012, he was named best male artist in Zimbabwe at the Zim Hip Hop Awards.

7. His musical inspiration is the general people and God, he says.

8. His hit song “Wenera” was his first ever music video, the video was named Video Of The Year at the 2012 edition of the NAMAs. Wenera made it to number two on the PowerFM top 100 charts the same year.

9. Maskiri recently released a song with American RnB singer Keisha White titled ‘Africa’.

10. Maskiri once fell of the third floor and suffered injuries, he maintains he slipped and was not pushed.
