Tunga nominated for NAMA award

Popular local drama Tunga has been nominated for the outstanding screen production at the NAMA awards. The drama which is premised on life in the pre colonial era in Zimbabwe is a favourite prime time show for a lot of people. It is directed by Slim Magombedze. It is aired every Friday at 7.30 pn on Ztv.

The drama is not attributed to any specific period in history but is evidently a representation of the Shona society before colonial rule. It deals with issues of chieftaincy, lineage, marriages and culture in ancient Zimbabwe. The actors are always dressed in traditional apparel such as clothes made from animal hides.

The drama is also famous for the authentic traditional hairstyles that the actors will be putting on. Tunga is a true celebration of Zimbabwean history and culture. It bears a great lesson on cultural relations in the past. The drama so popular such that even the young at heart who might not have a clue about life before colonization still enjoy it.

The drama centres around a young man Tunga, real name Takura Kachambwa who tries to fight for true love after the love of his life is taken by another man through the traditional method of Musengabere.

In his quest he encounters a lot of challenges and attracts various enemies who put him in the spotlight for trying to defy tradition. Other issues of chieftaincy and trade also arise. Tunga definitely deserves the nomination thanks to the opportunity provided by the national broadcaster to air it.

Takura Kachambwa and fellow actor Brighton Matshaka have both been nominated for the people’s choice award as well for their roles in Tunga.
