La liga eyes bigger Zim presence

Top European league La Liga has set its sights on accelerating its presence in Zimbabwe following a past weekend dominated by Spanish flavor.

Last Friday Real Betis officially launched Betis Academy Zimbabwe at an occasion graced by Africa’s La Liga Managing director Marcos Pelegrin as well as Sports minister Kirsty Coventry. To add to the glamorous launch La Liga on Sunday hosted a watch party which attracted 70 Zimbabwean fans that got to witness Real Betis overcome Elche 3-1.

Following all the La Liga activity Marcos Pelegrin who left the country on Tuesday  declared plans to ensure the Spanish league grows in popularity through the hosting of more watch parties going forward, “Obviously this was a big opportunity for us and we have seen Zimbabweans warming up to La Liga which is one of the biggest leagues in Europe. We will continue to host watch parties ion the future and we look forward to visiting Zimbabwe more often”, said Pelegrin.

To add to Pelegrin’s vision La Liga were visibly excited after posting “Maita Zvenyu Zimbabwe” on the official La Liga Facebook page which boasts of 69 million followers.

La Liga’s main competitor in Zimbabwe is the English Premier Soccer League which is the main supported league in the country. However the coming in of Betis Academy Zimbabwe, the hosting of watch parties and the securing of La Liga television rights by national broadcaster ZBC is expected to see the Spanish league enjoying more popularity in the country.
