Theatre Gives It’s Take on the End of the Mugabe Era

Art can imitate life sometimes and a new Zimbabwean story will be played out on stage. Titled ‘Operation Restore Regasi’, the play will show at Harare’s Theatre in the Park. This will take place between 28 to 30 March 2018?

For three nights audiences get to watch a play that depicts the role of the former first lady, Grace Mugabe in the events that led up to the military intervention last year.

The play is satirical and the writer explains, “I decided to use comedy because I feel its the best way people can reflect to past events with attaching too many feelings.”

He added, “At the end of the day we should all be able to look back and laugh at history whilst we shape the future.”

The play was written by Charles Munganasa. A graduate of Theatre Arts at the University of Zimbabwe.

On what inspired the play, Munganasa said, “I was inspired by the need to document such a historical event and to be able to tell it to the whole world through my own voice and language as a writer.”

The play will be available only after all tbe tours. The play was received well in Masvingo. The writer hopes that by the end of year, the whole country will receive it well.

When it comes to future plans for the play, there is hope for a tour and perhaps a screenplay. However that depends on sponsorship. According to Munganasa, “It is an expensive production which comes with a crew of ten people and a full set which is constructed on stage together with Presidential properties.”

Despite the challenges, the writer is optimistic. “This a great play which should be watched by every Zimbabwean and those beyond our borders. I call upon sponsors and promoters to chip in and help this play to reach its fullest potential.” Fans can be expected to laugh their lungs out.
