Essential Vintage-Inspired Pieces Worth Wearing This Fall

What’s old is new again, or just repurposed, reproduced, or reimagined. The digs of yesteryear continue to reemerge in modern fashion, giving us new ways to wear old looks. These five timeless, vintage-inspired pieces are always worth the hype.

The Wingtip Shoe

Generally speaking, the wingtip shoe features a toe cap outline that goes around the shoe and the side of the foot, creating a “winged” effect. Wingtips are often referred to as brogues; brogues are defined by decorative proliferations that outline certain areas of the shoe. Because brogues often shape the toecap and because wingtips are part of the brogue family, the terms “brogues” and “wingtips” are often used interchangeably, but they are not, strictly speaking one and the same. So, you can have a brogue that isn’t a wingtip, and you can have a wingtip detail that isn’t a brogue.

The Blouson Jacket

Style icon  solidified his place in movie lore when he wore, and allegedly kept, the memorable red blouson windbreaker in Rebel Without A Cause. His look has stood the test of time, epitomizing laidback cool. The blouson jacket is now a wardrobe must-have: By definition, a blouson is “a garment having a close waistband with blousing of material over it,” meaning they are tighter at the waist and loosen up above it. Blousons create a natural waistline and an often slimmer shape; in some cases, the blousing is baggier, as seen in the 80s and 90s. Several throwback jackets utilize a blouson, including the bomber, moto, windbreaker, and souvenir. When shopping, the key is to find a blouson jacket that represents your personal style and body type.

The Classic Kicks

Many declared Run DMC’s 1986 hit “My Adidas” as the birth of sneaker culture, voicing new attention to how sneakers played a role in an outfit and acted as an individualized or cultural statement: These three-stripe low tops are still sartorially sound. These days, having a classic, clean sneaker available can put the finishing touch on an everyday getup, or add a touch of personality to a more formal ensemble.

Corduroy Pants

Corduroy’s history goes as far back as the ancient Egyptians, later making its way into Europe before making a name for itself in the States during the 20th century. Since its working class stateside roots, corduroy pants have weaved in and out of favor as a fashion trend, peaking with the anti-establishment sect in the 1960s thanks to numerous wearings. Since then, corduroy has refined itself, making it a natural substitute for denim that adds texture to a cool weather outfit. For those seeking subtlety, a deep blue suit pant is the way to go.
