Tendai Mtawarira poised for super rugby record

Zimbabwean born and bred rugby player is set to become super rugby’s most capped player at the weekend. Sharks’ Zimbabwe-born prop Tendai Mtawarira says he never thought he would one day become the most capped South African in Super Rugby history.

Mtawarira will earn his 157th Super Rugby cap, moving one ahead of former Springbok captain Adriaan Strauss, who ended on 156 having represented both the Bulls and the Cheetahs in his career.

Mtawarira is set to attain the caps record when the Sharks take on the Bulls at Ellis Park in South Africa. Apart from club rugby Mtawarira has also been an influential figure for the Springboks.

Tendai Mtawarira was born and bred in Zimbabwe where he attended the greater part of his High School at Churchill Boy’s High before moving to Peter House as a lower sixth student.

It was during his days at Peterhouse when the beast was spotted by Sharks Academy and upon finishing his A’level studies Mtawarira moved to South Africa where he eventually graduated into a senior Sharks player. Top performances would eventually result in Mtawarira being called up into the Springboks where he has earned several caps over the years.
