Boy Killed By A Lion On Uncle’s Watch

A fourteen year boy lost his life and was eaten by a lion while guarding family crops with his uncle in the North East in Mariga village near the Zambian and Mozambican borders.

The young boy whose name was not mentioned was attacked in the early hours of Monday morning whilst he was sleeping. He was in his uncle’s watch when the incident happened.

The boy had been guarding the maize crop from elephants, rhinos and buffaloes. Only the boy’s head was discovered.

“Usually we build a watch tower so that those manning the field sleep on a high place. However the boy was on his uncle’s company so they decided to sleep on the ground. The lion came and attacked him before dragging him away,” said the local chief, Peter Enock Chapoto.

This is not the first time an incident like that has happened in the district. In 2012 four people were attacked and killed by lions while on a safari. Over a hundred families were displaced due to the attacks.
