2019 in retrospect. The good, the bad and the uncertain.

2019 is one year that most people would like to forget. It resulted in the suffering of many people and the worsening economic situation led to an increase in crime, prostitution,drug abuse and corruption among a whole list of condemnable things. It however, had its own fair share of good things. We unpack the year 2019!

1. Showbiz

The arts industry was vibrant with the major highlights being Vimbai Zimuto parading her naked body online and later on hosting an art exhibition that set tongues wagging. Enzo ishall released controvesial videos such as 50 Magate, Ngoro and Mutasvi and also left his musical stable Chillspot records to patner with prophet Passion Java. Tammy Moyo flew the national flag high by releasing a world class video Kwandinobva and later staging shows all over the world. She was also invited to perfom at the Coke Studio in Kenya.

Musical heavyweight Oliver Mtukudzi passed away and was declared a national hero. Mai Titi and Madam boss kissed and made up after a heated online feud. The same is yet to be said for hip hop artists Stunner and Mudiwa. DJ Stavo announced his retirement from the decks whilst King 98 scooped several accolades at the Zim hip hop awards. The young rapper also had a !assive collabo with Nasty C. Ngaibake video sent fans into a frenzy as well as Jah Prayzah’s Sadza nemuriwo.

2. Abductions

2019 was marred with abductions of outspoken characters such as Gonyeti, Platinum Prince and doctor Peter Magombeyi. The government claimed a third force was in operation.

3. Lavish spending

While the rest of the population languished in poverty, some high spenders were busy gifting themselves with all sorts of luxurious items. Pokello rounded off the year with a 2020 range Rover as did Luminista. Other celebs who bought new cars include Khama Billiat, Dj Anusa, Justice Wadyajena and Passion Java who each bought a Lamborghini

4. Mthuli Ncube

He emerged as one of the most loathed personalities in the country when he introduced the removal of the multi currency system. His monetary policy was also a pain for most.

5. Polad

This was a creation of the president who invited opposition political parties to discuss the way forward in terms of developing the country. MDC A refused to be a part of the negotiations.

6. Arrests

ZACC made some shocking arrests this year including that of former tourism minister Prisca Mupfumira, Marry Chiwenga, Saviour Kasukuwere, Ignatius Chombo, Phelekezela Mphoko and other high profile figures who were being charged with corruption charges emanating from the time they were still in office.

7. August shootings

These will forever be engraved in the hearts of many people. Soldiers opened up fire on civilians who were protesting in Harare CBD area.

8. Appointments

Cabinet was reshuffled and the high court appointed new judges namely Paul Musithu, Webster Chinamora, Zisengwe and Dube Banda. New magistrates were also sworn in and the anti corruption commission roped in Justice Loice Mawokomatanda as its chairperson.

9. Instagram challenges

These included the fifty magate challenge, bottle cap challenge and Mutasvi challenge.

10. Prices of goods

Prices of goods skyrocketed to unimaginable amounts. Most people had a generally tough year.
