Azam TV Eyes Zimbabwe PSL Broadcasting Rights to Boost Local Football Coverage

Satellite broadcaster Azam TV is in advanced talks to secure broadcasting rights for live Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League (PSL) matches, signaling its growing investment in Zimbabwe-focused content. The company’s technical services manager, Munyaradzi Kapfudza, confirmed the development during a subscriber prize-giving ceremony held in Harare on Friday.
Kapfudza revealed that discussions are underway with PSL administrators to finalise arrangements that would see Azam airing live league matches, replicating its successful sports broadcasting model in Tanzania. “We beam live league matches in Tanzania and we are committed to doing the same here once approval has been secured. For now, PSL games are available on channels like ZBC,” he said.
Azam TV’s potential entry into Zimbabwe’s top-flight football broadcasting scene could introduce healthy competition, particularly for SuperSport, which has long dominated local sports coverage. The move would also give local football fans more viewing options and elevate the overall media exposure of the PSL.
The Tanzania-based broadcaster has already made inroads into Zimbabwe’s media landscape by including local channels like Bulawayo’s Keyona TV—exclusive to Azam and accessible through the government-owned Transmedia decoder. The platform’s integration of Zimbabwean content is part of a broader strategy to build relevance among local audiences.
In addition to sports broadcasting, Azam recently secured rights to the 2024/25 CAF Champions League, offering live matches and highlights through its free-to-air platform and the AzamTV Max app. This regional expansion places the broadcaster in a strong position to become a key player in Zimbabwe’s media and entertainment space.
Kapfudza highlighted the company’s efforts to reflect the country’s cultural and entertainment needs, citing its partnership with Mashonaland Central-based Madziva FM. The collaboration aims to expand Azam’s presence in areas such as Mt Darwin, Matepatepa, and parts of Bindura, further strengthening its rural reach.
At the Harare event, over 100 loyal Azam TV subscribers were rewarded with prizes that included television sets, refrigerators, motorcycles, and cash. The gesture not only underscored the company’s customer-first approach but also emphasized its commitment to community engagement.
Chief financial officer Kedarnathrao Bedare reaffirmed Azam’s mission to deliver high-quality, accessible entertainment. “We thank our subscribers and remain dedicated to enhancing our services,” he said.
If finalized, the PSL broadcasting rights deal could mark a transformative moment for Zimbabwean football, providing much-needed visibility to local teams, players, and sponsors. For Azam TV, it would further cement its reputation as a regional media force committed to delivering relevant and affordable content.
