Charamba and Makarawu Make History with 1-2 Finish at SEC Indoor Championships

Zimbabwean sprinters Makanakaishe Charamba and Tapiwanashe Makarawu delivered a historic performance at the SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, securing a remarkable 1-2 finish in the men’s 200m final.

Charamba, representing Auburn University, stormed to victory in a championship record time of 20.13 seconds, breaking his own Zimbabwean indoor record. His compatriot, Makarawu of the University of Kentucky, followed closely behind, clocking 20.26 seconds to claim second place.

The SEC Indoor Championships are among the most competitive collegiate athletics events in the United States, featuring some of the fastest young sprinters in the world. Charamba’s dominance was evident from the preliminary rounds, and he sealed the title with a record-breaking run in the final.

Charamba, who competed in the Olympic final in Paris last summer, has been on an impressive trajectory, consistently lowering his national indoor record. Meanwhile, Makarawu’s silver-medal performance marked a new personal best, further cementing his status as one of Zimbabwe’s top sprinting prospects.

The duo’s success sets the stage for another thrilling showdown at the upcoming NCAA Indoor Championships, where they will face off against the best collegiate sprinters in the country. Their performances not only highlight Zimbabwe’s rising presence in international athletics but also position them as strong contenders for future global competitions.
