Zimbabwe’s Iconic Mbira DzeNharira Open 2026 Season with Sold-Out Harare Show

Zimbabwe’s renowned mbira ensemble, Mbira DzeNharira, launched the 2026 music season in emphatic style with a sold-out performance at The Yard, formerly Bar Rouge, at Long Cheng Plaza in Harare. The show marked a powerful return for the group and reaffirmed its place as a pillar of traditional Zimbabwean music.
Led by Tendayi “Samaita” Gahamadze, the outfit delivered a high-energy performance that drew a full house last Friday. Fans filled the venue early, ready for an evening rooted in culture, rhythm, and collective memory. From the opening notes, the atmosphere signaled a weekend set to be defined by song and dance.
The group took audiences on a journey through time, performing well-loved classics that have shaped their legacy. Songs such as Ndoenda Kwambuya, Muchati Kudiiko, Magamba, Zvowoenda Harare, Karimudande, and Toputika Neshungu sparked loud singalongs and sustained dancing. Each track reinforced the band’s deep connection with its audience and its role in preserving musical heritage.
Clad in their signature animal skins, Gahamadze and his bandmates embodied their role as cultural custodians. Their stage presence, combined with precise mbira rhythms and layered vocals, held the crowd’s attention throughout the night. Fans responded with praise and generous gifts, including cash offerings, a clear sign of appreciation and long absence from live performances by the group.
Speaking to Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub after the show, Gahamadze expressed gratitude for the turnout and support. He said the response exceeded expectations, especially for a January performance. He noted that opening the season with such energy was encouraging for artists committed to promoting Zimbabwean culture.
With a career spanning more than 30 years, Gahamadze views his work as a mission grounded in values. He said music has allowed the group to teach principles of Ubuntu, love, and unity across generations. He emphasized that mbira music continues to touch millions and strengthen respect for African traditions.
Mbira DzeNharira’s sold-out Harare show underscored the enduring appeal of traditional music in a modern city setting. The performance proved that mbira remains relevant, powerful, and capable of drawing large audiences. As the 2026 season begins, the group has set a strong tone for a year centered on culture, continuity, and live performance excellence.
