We all want nice, clean and bright looking teeth. Keeping your teeth clean and healthy does not only boost your confidence but is good for your oral hygiene which can reduce the chances of having oral cancer.

Here are ten tips to maintain clean, healthy teeth.

1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, the best time being after meals.

2. Change your toothbrush at least after every three months and choose one with a small head to access back teeth. Soft bristles are kinder to your teeth.

3. Use just enough fluoridated toothpaste, fluoride helps harden tooth enamel and helps reduce the risk of decayed teeth.

4. Avoid or limit sugary foods as the bacteria in dental plaque change sugars into acids.

5. Don’t smoke or use smokeless tobacco, tobacco stains your teeth and increases the risk of gum disease and oral cancer.

6. Maintain a healthy diet to have healthy teeth. Avoid acidic drinks like soft drinks and fruit juices. Eat more vegetables and fruits.

7. Floss your teeth use a slow and gentle sawing motion.

8. Protect your teeth from injury; avoid using your teeth for anything other than chewing like opening bottles or cracking nuts.

9. Rinse or chew some gum after eating, rinsing your mouth with an antibacterial rinse will help prevent decay and gum problems.

10. Have regular appointments with your doctor at least after every six months. Your doctor can remove plaque that you can’t remove by brushing or flossing.
