7 African Countries That Have Had Female Presidents
According to World Economic Forumthere’s only been sixty three female presidents and prime ministers since 1960. Of those 63 only seven are African. Here are the only seven African countries that have had female Presidents and their term length.
1. Sylvie Kinigi – Burundi
She was the Prime Minister of Burundi from 10 July 1993 to 7 February 1994, and acting President from 27 October 1993 to 5 February 1994.
2. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf – Liberia
She is the current President of Liberia. She went into office on the 16th of January 2006.
3. Rose Francine Rogombe` – Gabon
She was the actingPresident of Gabon from the 10th of June 2009 to the 16th of October 2009.
4. Monique Ohsan Bellepeau – Mauritius
She was the acting President of Mauritius from the 31st of March 2012 to the 21 of July 2012. She came back into office as acting President again from May 2015 to June 2015.
5. Joyce Banda – Malawi
She was the President of Malawi from the 7th of April 2012 to the 31st of May 2014.
6. Catherine Samba Panza – Central African Republic
She is the current acting President of Central African Republic since the 23rd of January 2014.
7. Ameenah Gurib – Mauritius
She is the current President of MMauritius, she went into office on the 5th of June 2015.
