“No Maths & Science No Degree” -Says Minister of Higher & Tertiary Education Jonathan Moyo
The Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development, Professor Jonathan Moyo has revealed the government plan to make it mandatory for students wishing to enroll in universities and other institutions of higher learning to have Mathematics and Science subjects at Ordinary level.
Speaking during a familiarization meeting with both academic and non-academic staff at Great Zimbabwe University in Masvingo on Monday, Professor Moyo said, “We want to start with the ECD curriculum emphasizing Mathematics and Science. We don’t expect those without these subjects to enroll at higher and tertiary education. They can do other things as we’re not shutting the door for them to do different courses. One should have Mathematics and Science to proceed to tertiary.”
He then took the conversation to twitter to explain further, “Everyone should have maths & science as part of their basic education at least up to “O” Level! Maths & science are what drive STEM based 21st century economies & this is an evidence based modern truth!”, he tweeted.
“It’s not about being academic or not but about having a complete & balanced basic education from ECD to O-Level!”, he explained. Professor Moyo said all schools will be provided with fully science kits fit for purpose!
